Juv dunlin ? (1 Viewer)

Note that New World Dunlins conduct their preformative molt out of juvenile plumage before migrating south. Thus, in much of Canada and the US away from the far north, this plumage is rarely seen. However, one monkey wrench is that Greenland breeders, I think, are like European breeders in initiating fall migration before completing (even starting?) fall molts (preformative in first-years, prebasic in older birds) and that such occasionally shows up in far-eastern Canada and northeastern US.

Anyway, the take-home message is that, in most of the New World, birders do not see the plumage illustrated by this photo.

Interesting info, but not relevant here - Capdegat's questions have all been from Northumberland, UK (at least, those where he has let on about the location!) ;)

Agree juvenile Dunlin.
