Upton Warren (28 Viewers)

Tuesday work party

Today 12 of us refurbished and re-floated some of the rafts and a new 'open' rescue platform.
Almost immediately terns landed on 2 of the 3 rafts. The raft that was partially opened last week has 3 clutches of common tern eggs. At present there are 5 pairs of terns on site.

Birding at the Moors

GCG. little grebe 6. Shoveler pr. Gadwall 4. Teal pr. Shelduck pr. Tufted 38. lapwing 4. Oystercatcher 4 plus 5. chicks (could be 6). Dunlin. LRP.
Common tern 10. water rail.
Kestrel. Buzzard.
swift c45. small numbers of all 3 hirundines.
Cetti's Warbler 3 singing. still double figures of both sedge and reed warblers. Whitethroat north moors. blackcap 3. chiffchaff 4. goldcrest singing.
 
Birding Flashes

This evening spent a pleasant 4 hours with good company.
An all action scene throughout. not only were there still 11 young lapwing but also a pair of redshank mated and even attempted to make a nest. There are now 10 avocet sitting and at least one lapwing. A female teal appeared and 2 drake shoveler where involved in sorties over the single female.

Species count Flashes :
TEAL fem. Shoveler 4 (pr +2 males ). Gadwall pr. Shelduck 4. Tufted 55.
Avocet 34+1 chick. Blackwit. Lapwing 14 +11 chicks. Oystercatcher 3 (1 sitting ). LRP 4. Redshank pair.
Herring gull. BHG 650. LBBG 5.
Kestrel. raven 2.
Cetti's Warbler. sedge warbler 4. Reed warbler 5.
song thrush. Linnet 6. pied wag 2.
 
Possibly 2 of the smartest Ruffs I've ever seen at Upton Warren. They flew off due to disturbance from the sewage works. The Sanderlings were still there when I left.

Managed a few hours at the flashes today...great views of male Marsh Harrier being buzzed by all the gulls...plus Sanderling (new for 2016)...and a few pics of other things....

Missed the Ruff though...maybe early tomorrow!!

Sanderling

Having just looked through the excellent "The Birds of Upton Warren" report for 2014/15 I notice that Sanderling was not sighted in either of the last 2 years.

The last record of the species at UW would appear to be the bird found by Terry Hinett on 27th May 2013, which was also there the following day.
