Pentax PF-65 EDAll Meets The Nikon EDG FEP-25W Eyepiece

I sold my Nikon EDG Spotter with zoom and a few other Nikon FEP eyepieces to other members here because I no longer enjoy viewing with one eye. While I will no longer be carrying or using a spotting scope in the field, my interest in trying to match other spotting scopes eyepieces with other spotting scope manufacturers scopes that were not designed to do so has just peeked my interest even more now. As a result of a family members purchase of a new Pentax PF-65 EDAll, I was able to make the calculation that one of the extra Nikon EDG eyepieces(FEP-25W) that I had not sold would indeed come to focus on a Pentax PF-65 EDAll. The pictures below are the results of a permanent Nikon EDG FEP-25W eyepiece attachment with a recent new purchase I made of another Pentax PF-65 EDAll. The second picture shows the Nikon ocular lens in comparison to my cousin’s XW20 eyepiece, with the ocular lens of the Nikon being slightly larger. The Nikon Eyepiece easily focuses properly, providing an amazing wide view. The view which can easily be seen while leaving both eyes open is the best I have seen to date on the little Pentax with any 20x(power) eyepiece. When comparing side by side the Pentax XW20 on my cousins Pentax PF-65 EDAll and my Pentax PF-65 EDAll with the Nikon EDG FEP-25W eyepiece, we both liked the view with the Nikon EDG FEP-25W the best. The Pentax XW20 gives an amazing view but when looking thru the Nikon eyepiece it just did everything better ..... from the wide view, to the crystal clear/sharp bright image.

I love the fact you can’t stay away from the PF-65. It’s a love affair!

Martin, It’s funny that you mention my history with the little Pentax. My memory counts at least six or more purchases of the Pentax 65 EDAll over the years. It seems that every time my curiosity is satisfied with one Pentax, another special eyepiece comes to my attention and I need again to see if the little Pentax can once again be tested to its limit. Ever since I realized what a huge difference there were in optical performance between all the other 1.25” standard lower cost eyepieces and the Pentax XW eyepieces I new that the 65 EDAll Pentax was capable of much more. Every time I see a great deal on one of these scopes I can not resist the temptation to once again experiment to see if it can perform to that next level of optical performance if the right eyepiece comes along. I know I have said this before ... having the ability to use so many different brand eyepieces combined with its compact size with ED glass is what makes this scope so appealing. Still made in Japan, with discounted prices one can still find them new selling for around $400 or less in the USA. I think so many first time scope users never consider the Pentax because of all the hype over bigger, more power and the allure of all that special exotic glass that the more expensive scope manufactures make today, when in fact the Pentax 65ED will probably satisfy most users for a heck of a lot less. I have praised the Pentax enough .... here are a few more pictures I took of the the Pentax XW20 next to the Nikon EDG FEP-25W eyepiece along with the top collar ring (tighting ring)removed from the Pentax scope next to the silver locking ring attached to all the Nikon FEP eyepieces. With the tighting ring off the Pentax and the locking ring off the Nikon FEP-25W eyepiece, the ocular opening of the Nikon eyepiece will completely fit over the stem of the Pentax ocular lens with about 1mm clearance. The inside of the Nikon eyepiece ocular stem extends about 16mm into the Pentax scope ocular port, enough to enable the Nikon eyepiece to focus properly. The last picture are the material used to attach the Nikon eyepiece to the Pentax, the Liquid Steel was the attachment material the rest was used for the layering /cosmetics

The picture with pointer shows the Nikons ocular stem, the Nikon FEP-20W along with the FEP-30W were physically different unable(could not get close enough inside the Pentax’s ocular port)I think to make them work with the Pentax. I do not have the zoom eyepiece any more so I could not visually see if that was capable to be properly attached/work. First the permanent Liquid Steel applied, left to set. Then the all weather 3M Electrical tape double wrap followed by the 28 gauage wire double wrap with the last double wrap being the #95 paracord.

How could you not fall in love with the Pentax PF65ED?
It's a cracker.
I have one and it's big brother the PF80ED.
I bought a mint PF65ED s/h for £175 and I use it more the the 80ED.
Highly recommended.

Indeed. It is a cracker. I wish I hadn’t sold mine. If I see one for a good price when I have spare cask, I’ll get another.
