It's certainly a Death's-head Hawkmoth larva.

It's a very interesting record as although it was recorded by Barceló & Mayol. 1980. ESTUDIO ECOLÓGICO DE LA ALBUFERA DE MALLORCA, we've never recorded the adult moth (or larva) in more than 25years of trapping at s'Albufera, so it would be interesting to know exactly where you saw (photographed) it.

It was probably feeding on one of the Solanacea that grow there.

Hi Martin,
It was on the ground 1mtr. before the left turn to the Bishop1 hide. almost stepped on it so picked it up and put it on a low branch, not sure now if i should have left it on the ground in the undergrowth. had seen a rat there.

Some good stuff being posted on this thread:t:

It’s been 4 years since my first visit and considering how close Majorca is it represents tremendous value for money if you manage a cheap flight and even for somebody like myself who does not drive to stop anywhere from Alcudia to Pollensa and hire a bike and use the coastal bus service there is a great variety of habitats:t:

That might have been a Black rat as you can often see their nests in the trees down the paths.
It looked almost full grown so was probably looking for somewhere to pupate (underground or in leaf litter). At least you stopped it being trodden on!

Best wishes

Martin

Some very big storms around at the moment so nobody has ventured out for a couple of days.
Let’s hope a few good birds have been blown this way.
Mike

Walking around my local park, there seems to have been a large influx of Black Redstarts and Robins, they were everywhere I looked.
Also, a Sparrowhawk flew over the port from the lighthouse where a Stew and I saw one last week so maybe it didn’t leave the Island after all. They do winter here occasionally.
Two dark falcons flew over too, I would say Eleonora’s but they were distant.
Mike

Glad to be back on the Island despite the rain. Entertaining friends slows down the birding. However, Seems very quiet out there.
Birds seen included Audouins Gulls, Sandwich terns, Marsh Harriers, Booted Eagles, Kestrels, Common Snipe, Cattle,Little and Great Egrets, Cetti and Sardinian Warblers, Crossbills, Firecrests, Goldfinches and Serins, Stonechats and abundance of Robins and Black Redstarts.

Two Northern Wheatears seen at S’ Amarador today. I thought they would have left by now.

Where are the goodies Mike?

Hi Mike,
Good to know you are back on the sunshine Island.
Sorry about the rain though, more on the way I think.
The goodies are hiding at the moment but they are out there just waiting for us to go find them.
Yes, it’s late for Wheatears but there are a few around.
A walk to Cala Egos today produced large flocks of Starling, lots of Meadow pipits, Serins, Linnets and many Larks too distant to identity. A scope and a few hours would pay dividends I’m sure, the fields opposite the Police station at Cala d’Or were heaving with birds and Painted Lady butterflies everywhere.
Two Plain tiger butterflies and 14 Red-veined darters.
Mike

Thanks Mike,
I trust you!!!!
Good day for Butterflies and Dragonflies here as well. Plain Tigers, Cleopatras, Small coppers, as well as Red veined darters.

Mike

I've written some notes (attached) on a brief stay down in the south east earlier this month. Thanks to Mike M for introducing me to a part of the island that Mrs B and I were not at all familiar with. I have a feeling we'll be back..

Stew

The benefits of walking the same patch every day have paid off yet again for Mirella who found a Short-eared owl roosting in a pine tree in Cala d’Or. Not an easy bird to see here, I’ve only ever seen one coming in-off the sea last year.
Today a Black Kite and a Marsh Harrier left the Island from the Cap de Ses Salines although the migration of raptors is now largely over.
I will post the totals for the autumn when they are available but it looks like the most common raptor through the Cap was Common Kestrel.
Mike

Hello!
I attach the birds seen this morning in the park.
Regards,
Cristina.
