"Tapisvr has performed an illegal operation" (1 Viewer)

When trying to shut my PC down (Win 98SE) I keep getting this message ;-
'Tapisvr has performed an illegal operation..................'
I did a quick 'Google' search and it seems it's something to do wth my modem.
I have recently upgraded to Broadband, so installed the new modem via a USB lead and disconnected the old one from the phone point. I didn't actually do anything else with the old modem. Do I need to 'Remove' somehow, obviously not physically.
It's not causing massive problems, it just prevents me from shutting down normally, I have to use the main on/off switch.

Any help once again much appreciated.

It sounds as if you ought to uninstall the dial-up modem. I think you can do it through the control panel but you would probably do best to wait until someone more knowledgeable than me offers advice!
Good luck,
Ken

Hi Paul,

Better to remove your modem, IF that is causing the problem.

In the error message is there a 'details' button? Post what it says.

Your system may have been compromised by a 'nasty'.

Do an online virus scan here http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/ or here http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

Update your installed anti-virus then run a full scan.

Use CWShredder, from here: http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html or http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/CWShredder.exe or http://aumha.org/downloads/cwshredder.zip Install it to your Desktop, close everything, start CWShredder and click the Fix button.

Next, install Ad-Aware SE, start it, click the 'Check for Updates' button to install updates, then scan your system, and remove anything it finds.
Ad-Aware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/

Install, update and run SpyBot Search & Destroy, scan your system, and then remove
anything in RED. SpyBot S&D: http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download

Check the 'walkthrough' I wrote in Post #3 http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=19879

Some of the above 'offline' scans may need to be run from 'Safe Mode'.

Good Luck,

Andy.

Would it be more likely to be a conflict between the old dial-up modem, assuming it’s not been disabled in Control Panel/Device Manager, and the now present ADSL/USB modem than yet another virus?

Many apologies for not replying to the postings last year. I have actually now sorted the problem............. I have a new PC running Windows XP and no problems up to now, but thanks again for the advice.
