Niger Seed (1 Viewer)

Anyone offering this expensive seed?

I know of a couple who have a small town garden in north Norfolk and last winter they had a flock of 60 Goldfinches regualrly feeding on Niger. It was placed loose on a very low table and in a specialist niger seed feeder.

Ihave tried it occasionaly but no luck, even though I do have goldfinch in my garden coming to drink and bathe.

We had around 40 Goldfinch flocks feeding on it over last winter and Spring, though they seem to be just as happy with broken sunflwer kernels. At the moment even the Coal Tits are eating it !
I agree that it is expensive, but when fed from the special feeders it lasts quite a while and to be honest, the enjoyment from having so many Goldies in the garden makes it well worth the cost :)

I keep two feeders filled with niger, one being a sock feeder which always seems to be more popular. The goldfinch around here rarely go for anything else. Expensive seed but worth it to see those beauties!

Burhinus, you know what they say about stupid questions!! Okay, I searched through a few years of pics and found one of the goldfinch on a sock feeder. Not a great pic but you'll get the idea. They're great, washable, very cheap and the goldfinch here in the states seem to prefer them!
