Lens for T3i? (1 Viewer)

I'm currently using a Powershot SX50 HS, I want a lens for my sister's T3i. I have been looking and the Tamaron 70-300mm looks good (equivalent to 112-460mm on aps-c sensor), what other lens would be good?

I was looking into $1000 range lenses but upon looking at $400 lenses I think they are good. Are lenses like the 400mm f5.6 prime from Canon way better and worth it?
