Anyone know if the Glanville's are out at the mainland UK site at Hordle Cliff yet ?

I saw tons of caterpillars at a site on the IOW a few weeks ago.

I run the Hants and IOW Butterfly Conservation website, and no sightings have been reported to me of Glanville Fritillary at Hordle Cliff this year.

Is Sand Point near Weston-super-mare? i.e. an introduced colony?

Cheers,

- Pete

Sand Point is just along the coast from Weston Super Mare but I am afraid I do not know if this is an introduced colony.
There was a Chough there a few months ago which caused a lot of excitement amongst the Somerset Birders but it was only there for a few days. Roger

It is definately an introduced colony. It is a well known one.
Research has shown that for most butterfly species introductions don;t work well at all.

WE can be fairly sure because of the work done on Glanville Fritillary metapopulation dynamics by Prof Hanski's people in Finland. That this isolated population will not last.
