Camera / lens insurance (1 Viewer)

I'm interested in what others do about camera/lens insurance particularly when in boot of car or when out and about. Any information greatfully received!

House insurance as a separate item.

Covered for most eventualities except in the small print if it is in the boot of a car and the car itself is stolen. However, if stolen from the boot and the car is not stolen then this is covered.

About 10 or so years ago when our camera bags were stolen when we were on holiday from the boot of our locked and alarmed car in Abernethy Forest, the only way we could make a claim for them was on our holiday insurance which covered in full [the contents for our fully comp car policy only covered about £100 which barely covered our loss...of course the car insurance paid for the damage they had done to get in] so read the small print even for the car insurance to say how much contents it will cover for.

Also be careful about what constitutes a boot. Items must not be visible from outside the car, and sometimes the policies seem to read that hatchbacks are not covered, even if the parcel shelf is across....

I would also check the value of individual pieces of kit against the maximum value of unspecified items in the 'All Risks' section of the policy. If the value of your camera or lens exceeds this sum then the insurers need to be told for it to be covered. This normally carries a small(ish) extra premium as well.
