We are planning to spend approx 12 days driving in a winnebago from calgary to vancouver island in August. Which route should we take, and where should we stop off for the best bird spotting, interested in anything from warblers up to the eagles !! Banff is definitely on route.

Also what's the best bird identification book to purchase?

thanks in advance for any help....

I can't help you on the locations, but on the guide, it depends on how much you plan on reading it ahead of time. If you are, Sibley is good, otherwise something like Peterson or Kaufman would be better.

We drove from Calgary to Vancouver Island in Jul-Aug this year. Although it was a family holiday I was birding each morning for an hour or two most days. If you are interested pm me and I will send you a copy of my field notes for the trip.

The following links lead to two birdfinding guides for British Columbia and Vancouver Island that are invaluable for a successful trip. The books are available in many public libraries in the province as well. Don't let the comical cover put you off, the book is serious and includes detailed information for finding regular species as well as specialties. The third link is to a website with FREE checklists for the province and island with bar graphs.

I did the same trip earlier this year - i had a trip report which might be of use if you go a similar route.
