2 Things - 1 - does anyone know when a new supplement (which would be 48) comes out, and 2 - does anyone know how often the AOU puts out new official "editions." Most recent one was 7th in 1998 with a bunch of supplements after that.

Hi Alex,

The 6th edition came out in 1983, and the 5th edition in 1957, 4th in 1931, 3rd in 1910, 2nd in 1895, and first in 1886 so...9-26 years if based only on precedent. My guess is that it will be sooner than that this time around, will all of the taxonomic shuffling going on. The supplements used to come out every two years in the July issue of the Auk, but there has been an annual supplement in July since 2002.

The AOU now release supplements annually.

The next one will be in the June/Julyish time frame.

I do not know the plans for the 8th edition.
