Pelicans on Alcatraz Island (1 Viewer)

Hello everyone. This is an embarrassingly simple query but I'd appreciate some advice to help me get an armchair tick.

Before I started birding I took a trip to the US (I'm from Liverpool, UK) to see a San Francisco 49ers game and, during my stay, I took a boat trip over to Alcatraz island.

As I'm sure you locals know, Alcatraz was named after the Spanish word for pelicans and I remember taking the boat back at the end of the day and seeing a group of pelicans flying overhead, which rounded the day off nicely.

Now that I'm a birder, I'd just like to check with you guys to see which breed these particular pelicans are - if more than one type occurs on the island then, of course, honour dictates that I can't count the sighting but I thought it was worth a shot.

Oh, as for the game itself I'd chosen the home game against the Dolphins (as they were big in the 80s when I first started to watch the sport) but it turned out that, by the time the game came around, both teams were playing so badly that the matchup was known as the Loser Bowl.

So the long and short of it is that, after travelling 5,173 miles to see my team lose the Loser Bowl, any help from my transatlantic brethren (and sistren) would be more than welcome!

With thanks in advance for your assistance.

John
