Thanks for the link. An interesting story. Quote:

“These exact measurements are the reason the metal-on-metal parts operate so smoothly, without needing to add grease, which is what some of the cheaper brands use to hide their less precise measurements.”

Some call that an "Achilles' Heel." Those who really use it, year after year in the field, call it really nice. Really nice indeed. I'll take it over greasy slop any day.

I like that!

" Ultimately, it is this combination
of highly skilled, dedicated workers and an obsessively precise process that produces
these masterpieces of innovation that every hunter wants to own"

yes, a very nice advertisement, indeed,

IMHO, this article helps explain some of the cost factors involved in the production of the "alpha's".
Decent wages, child care, canteen, etc.
Compare that to some of the Chinese factories run by the Chinese military in which workers children are forced work beside them and "motivational punishments" were (are) handed out.
After Tinaman Square there were even documented instances of executions.
Many folks are so blinded by low price that they refuse to take the human cost into account.

Well, all pretty usual for a mid-sized company in central Europe, not really news.

Nice piece of advertisement though, I have to agree o:)

I guess that is why I have Swarovski's after having a LOT of binoculars. My only two are the SV 8x32 Swarovision and the CL 8x30. For me they are the best. A 5 year apprenticeship. I wonder if the Chinese or even Zeiss have that.

Hi Dennis

Nice to hear from you again. Zeiss have several schemes for training up new starters:

1 StudiumPlus at Carl Zeiss

StudiumPlus is a full degree course including vocational experience. Students are enrolled at the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (University of Applied Science) while at the same time being employed at a company in the region. They are taught both technical and social skills. This makes StudiumPlus the ideal entry into the professional world, as it combines study with work.

Carl Zeiss Sports Optics GmbH offers 3 courses:

Industrial Engineering
Specialist discipline Mechanical Engineering, Specialist discipline Electrical Engineering

Business Administration
Specialist discipline Small Business Management, Specialist discipline Logistics Management

Engineering
Specialist discipline Mechanical Engineering,
Specialist discipline Electrical Engineering,
Specialist discipline Microsystem Technology / Optronics

The period of study lasts a total of 3 years and culminates in the international degree qualification Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.). During this time, periods of vocational training alternate with periods of study, guaranteeing a close connection between theory and practice.

We want to be successful. That is why the training of young people is a tradition in our company, and one which we value highly.

With our training opportunities we offer interested school leavers the chance to prepare themselves for the job market of tomorrow. For technical career paths the training takes place in the specially equipped training workshop. Naturally the trainees are supported by an experienced training team throughout their training period.
Currently over 35 trainees are undergoing training at Carl Zeiss Sports Optics GmbH.

3)
Internships at Carl Zeiss

Young people at the start of their working lives find that internships give them valuable insights into the professional world.

We offer internships both in lower and higher level education and enable our interns to acquire practical skills in the relevant specialist departments. Not only do they get to watch experienced employees, they are also actively involved in the work itself.

Content of the internship
The different internship sections are organised individually.

Duration
The internship lasts for 3-6 months.

They take this sort of thing very seriously in Germany.

Holy smoke Lee,

LOL Hi Jan

You old mischief-maker :-O

Can't you count? There are three types of training at Zeiss just like there are three bridges on the SF. No clones here :king:

Again nothing exiting here. Zeiss, just as any other company in Germany or Austria uses the dual education system (training in vocational schools and the company in parallel), which is the normal education for professionals in Germany, Austria, Switzerland (and Holland probably as well)...

It's now being cloned in China though ;)

"Holy smoke Lee,

I do love Swarovski binos. However, with Zeiss being founded more than 100 years earlier (1846 vs. 1949), there's a good chance they didn't clone their training program. If you love Nikon binoculars, you may also thank Zeiss; it was Zeiss techs and engineers that got them started.

Cheers,

Bill
