A question regarding gender make up of early emergers or over winterers.
Two weeks ago, during a very sudden warm spell, Brimstone and Small Tortoisheshell became quite suddenly apparent in fairly good numbers. Both species looked very fresh suggesting early emergence rather than hibernation as being the source so that's my first question, have the adults overwintered and suddenly emerged from hibernation or have they come from from pupae?
Secondly, in relation to the Brimstones, all sightings without exception, were of males, is this a known strategy or simply chance?
