Looks like Nikon is really getting back into the prime market with their new EDG binoculars. Much of the information, here on BF about these exciting new bins have kind of been "hidden", so far, in a different thread:

Meanwhile, more and more details are getting to be known. I think it makes sense to open a new thread for these. Maybe, administrators could move some of the posts here?

To get started, I am copying a few basic parts from those posts:

Disclosure: I work for Nikon

I am writing this with my very own pre-production 7x42 EDG glued to fingers, which makes typing a bit challenging but I can't make myself put them down! After using them for a week at the Space Coast Birding Festival in FL and showing them off at the wild and woolly SHOT Show just recently, I have to admit that I am in love with them!
They are improved over the LXL in just about every category. I am particularly pleased that many of the changes were specifically aimed at birders. Much improved depth of field is the most critical change in my opinion, but increased field of view, and the addition of a 7x42 to the line are also birder driven changes. I won't go into greater detail here except to say that they absolutely smoke! Production 42mm models are scheduled to hit the US in April with 32mm available in June.

For a close look at the EDG check out:

Check back in the next couple of weeks for more details.

As for the LXL, I love my 8x42 LXL as well, and they are clearly feeling abandoned. I don't think that are a large number of LXLs out there to be had, but those on the market should be a great deal. I know that one shop, One Good Tern, is clearing out their LXLs at cost, but I expect others will be as well. Either way, enjoy them!

EDG will replace the LXL/HGL (EDG will be called EDG everywhere it is sold to cut down on confusion) except for the 8x20 and 10x25 LXLs which will continue to be Nikon's high end compacts.

The eyecups are much improved. I expect that the durability of all cosmetic aspects of the EDG will be greatly improved over the LXL/HG. Rubber armor, improved neck strap, overall appearance, ect.

Water-repellent glass was not used in the EDG, though fog repellent cloths are available from Nikon that when applied to the glass achieves the same result.

10x42- $1999, 8x42- $1899, 7x42- $1799

Not sure what the prices will be in Europe. Some of the retailer in the US already have the prices up on their websites, some of the European retailers may do so soon as well.

Eagle Optics is now listing five EDG binoculars on their site and have full specs listed. (They are now listed as being out of stock of course.) The specs look very good (19.3 mm of eye relief, 28.6 ounces weight, and 403 foot field of view for the 8 x 42) except for the weight, so I guess I am still waiting to see binoculars that "have it all", at least for my purposes. See link here:

Hi Jim.

The EDG 8x32, 7x42 and 10x32 are also there if you follow the 'customers that viewed this page:' link.

The 8x32s look rather good too.

I've just had a look at the spec's for the 8x32's and compared them to the Zeiss 8x32FL's, which i own (and am very happy with, don't know why i looked really!!).

The new Nikons have a smaller FOV, a less good close focus, are bigger and weigh more and don't have a fancy coating to keep the rain off. They're also more expensive, the only plus side i can see is that they have better eye relief, which i guess is important to spectacle wearers.

It's to be hoped the view is good enough to negate the aforementioned. :h?:

Sometimes I had asked myself about what would be happen if the optics and glass of the Nikors where used in binoculars or an Spotter XL like. Let's wait until summer.

John, I will quote what they say about the Leica Ultravid 10x42HD "Wow!" glass,"Great shadow detail",'Eye relief is a little short for eyeglass wearers","One of the world's best binos"
Here is one of the comments about the Nikon EDG 10x42 "Simply superb in every respect" There are more of course.
