Jack of all Orders - Master of None
Hi,
a friend had a business trip to Shanghai last month and photographed this bird in a 'nature reserve' on the outskirts of the city. We think it's a Babbler - but any idea as to species?
TIA.
Steve.

Hi Steve - for a field guide you can buy the Chinese version of MacKinnon's Field Guide to the Birds of China - in at least one book shop in Shanghai for the remarkably cheap price of around 75RMB (But don't know which one - we have friend who has sent us copies). In that book all the plates and distribution maps are the same as in the English language version - so you have a useful tool, even if the main text is in Mandarin.
The Chinese name is -中国鸟类野外手册 (maybe you can copy/print that and go to one of the bigger bookshops and see if they have it).

Otherwise if you google OBC images you can get onto a database of images that includes almost all of China's birds - but that works best if you use the site together with a field guide.

good birding
Sid
