I think you are in the right area (Caradrina) but certainly not clavipalpis. Not sure about other alternatives as I'm away at present with only limited internet access.

I had doubted Mottled Willow other than it being a relative but see nothing like it in Waring.

Could it be C. gilva?

gilva is a recent addition to N Europe and is said to be expanding, who collates such records if it were one?
