Windows Security Update failing to install. (1 Viewer)

Hi
I keep getting this security update coming through from the windows update site

Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 (KB928366)

It downloads and then starts to install but fails to install, no reason being given. The Microsoft Knowledge Base is a crock of garbage at giving me an answer to the problem.
What I would like to know is
1. How important is this update?
2. If it ain't mega important then how do I stop the Update program continually downloading it?

My system is a HP Pavilion desktop about 3 years old running XP Service Pack 2 with Pentium 4 - 2.8Ghz processor and 1Gb RAM. I use ZoneAlarm Pro Internet Security, and I've tried to install the update with this turned off, as well as with it turned on.

Any help would be appreciated as it is starting to annoy me - big time.

Not something I have seen myself Keith. A quick google suggests that lots of people are having problems with this update. Can't vouch for them personally but have a look at these.

All a bit techy I’m afraid but see if anything here might help or give any clues:-

Also found this at:-

Go to this link below and download and run the .NET Framework clean up tool.

framework: http://astebner.sts.winisp.net/Tools...eanup_tool.zip

Then go to the following link and download .NET Framework 1.1 package:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

-Now remove .NET framework 1.1 using the cleanup utility.
-Now install the .NET framework 1.1 package.

Then rename softwaredistribution (in c:\windows) and catroot2 (in c:\windows\system32) folders in safe mode. (you can put "old" after the names of these folders".

Then restart the computer and try downloading updates again. Now KB928365, KB928366, KB928367 should get installed.

If all else fails...to disable or configure auto updates:-

It would also be a good idea to make sure all other "critical" widows updates are installed first. Although people are still having trouble when they are.

Microsoft had a bumpy weekend ... their servers were down and instead of their validation gizmo validating OSs; it was crashing systems ... initial reports were they'd have the problem fixed by "Tuesday" ... hehehe ... until somebody with brains found out what was going on and got them fixed PDQ.
