EDG - where are you? (1 Viewer)

That is a great value in my mind, I have that one. I prefer the dual open hinge over
the newer EDG II, more room for your fingers. I can compare.

Rebate seller who wanted the camera and not the bin.

There is an interesting difference between what people were willing to pay (only 2 bidders) and what Nikon are asking for the EDG 2.

I saw another example on a local birding email list. Someone bought an EDG (model unspecified but I presume a 8x42 or 10x42) EDG 1 took it on a birding trip to South America. Returned home. Armor was lifting so sent it back to Nikon. Got an brand new EDG 2 replacement. And is now selling it and asking $2000 for it (and quoting a new price of $2200ish) which is almost certainly more than he paid for it.

Dunno if he sold it but I don't think it's very savvy pricing ($1999!) ;)

But I don't see many folks buying EDGs at this price when Swaros or Leica (which certainly retain their luxury price on resale) are just a bit more. Or SLC HD are just a bit less. The EDGs are good but not that good in terms of brand recognition.

Sounds like the LX L all over again. Perhaps the price will drop in a year or so. Or the bubble bursts (a $3000 bin anyone?).

Eagle Optics is now showing pictures of the EDG whereas before it said "picture coming soon". Oddly, they are showing the open bridge models?

Thank you. I did not doubt that the new models are not the open bridge design - and no clue as to what EO is doing with old model photos. I thought the fact that pics have now appeared might mean they are close to taking down the "out of stock" flag. Uncertain times, to be sure.

Thanks for the heads-up on this. Not sure how the old EDG image got on the new product pages but we're in the process of changing it out.

Ben,
Any idea when you will have the product available? I think that I will wait until I can compare directly with the other glass. Unfortunately there is no where near NC that I am aware of to do a comparison - so I will likely wait until I can attend an event where the manufacturers are present or your organization is in attendance.

Ben,
I checked your site - Looks like you replaced the pic on all models except the 8x32. Not that I am nitpicking or anything.

New EDG 7x42 on the way!!!

Just ordered a pair of the new EDG 7x42's and they are shipping today from Wisconsin (Easy tO guess where). Other models are not yet in stock there.

BTW - this ain't no April Fools joke ... unless it's on me :)

The EDG 8x32 is a pro-level binocular featuring Nikon's highly acclaimed ED glass lenses, dielectric coated prisms and the lightest body design in its class.

"lightest body design in its class" ?

I presume the class is "EDG bins" as it's 23oz (that is 3oz less than the EDG 1, IIRC) which is heavier than the Zeiss, Leica and Swaro 32mm bins (the assumed class in my mind).

Marketing ... dontcha love it.

From what I understand the glass hasn't changed at all from the EDG I. I wouldn't rush to buy one right off anyway. They'll be giving them away at the end of the year trying to get rid of them, just like the EDG I. A $2000+ Nikon won't sell IMO.

Nikon will eventually price it's EDG below the prices of the other 3. That has been their history with the HG L/LX L models and it was successful so there does not seem to be a good reason to change it. Their problem, I suspect, will be deciding which of their many models to give priority to after they study the damage caused to their facilities by the earthquake and tsunami. I wouldn't look for them to "give away" the EDG by any means. They might, however, limit their production.

Anybody who would like a bargain on them should pick up any of the old models if they get a chance. My 10 x 32 which I got for $999.00 (plus camera) is a stunningly good binocular. Better than my 10 x 35 EII and it even gives my 10 x 42 SE a run for the money. I would like to compare it to Leica's, Swarovski's and Zeiss's 10 x 32's. It would not surprise me if it was better. And it is tough--I dropped it on a wooden parquet floor with no damage except a scuff mark on the rubber rim of the right objective barrel where it landed. After my heart recovered I concluded that there is something to be said, after all, for double hinges.

Once again, thanks for the head's up. Being changed now. As to an ETA on additional models, Nikon hasn't been able to give us one!

Ordered 8x32 edg at end of April not yet delivered. Leaving for Ecuador first week in July. Wondering if there is an availability issue of which I am not aware? If ever once in lifetime trip, this is it.

Eagle Optics has them in stock.

So does Camera Land:

I don't think you will want to go on a trip like yours with new binoculars without having a few weeks to use them hard and vet them out. Maybe you should think about canceling the order and getting them elsewhere?

Unless you are getting a much better price there?

They are on their way by police escort, but...

There's a hold up in the Bronx,
Brooklyn's broken out in fights.
There's a traffic jam in Harlem
That's backed up to Jackson Heights.
There's a scout troup short a child,
Medvedev's due at Idlewild
EDG II, EDG II, Where Aaaare You?

Bob has a point about not taking a new bin on a trip, but I guess that's mostly a nice way to rationalize not getting them in time for your once in a lifetime trip. If the bins fulfill their advertising and work for you, you won't need a break in time, you could just "point and shoot" and you're on your way to seeing your first GREAT GREEN MACAW, BANDED GROUND-CUCKOO AND CHOCÓ VIREO!

I don't really know what the hold up is, and I really do hope you get your EDG before you leave, but if I had to hazard a guess, the earthquake in Japan might have pushed back delivery dates.
