Still waiting to see a retailer offering "new" (redesigned) Nikon EDG binoculars in the USA. I think Mike indicated the official release date was at the SHOT convention (now over) this month. Any further updates Mike?

Camera Land, Inc. is advertising the complete line of EDG II bins and they are apparently in stock.

Whoopee! The sooner they get here, the sooner we will see old stock, used, and refurb EDG I models at discounted prices again.

As to "EDG - where are you?" I would ask Toody and Muldoone. They probably have a stash in the trunk of their patrol car. :)

If that one manages to cross the pond, I will be truly in awe, and the person who correctly identifies this archaic reference will receive a prestigious Uncle Tonoose No Prize!

"Car 54 where are you?" I must be too old...

Never seen anyone using a new EDG, come to think of it i haven't seen anyone using the old one either...

DING! DING! DING! Congratulations! John, you just one yourself this month's Uncle Tonoose No Prize!

And here is your prize (print out a copy and proudly display it on your office wall):

Good price. Thanks, BP, I will let my financier (mooreorless) know about this. He was going to buy the 8x32 EDG when it was on sale for $999, but dragged his feet so long that only the 10x32 model was available by the time he sweet talked his wife into letting him buy one.

Then I would get try it and see if it's worth trading him the ED2 and 8x30 EII for it. :)

I knew it was "Car 54, Where are you?", and I´m not even American! I can even sing you the theme tune! Do I get a prize too?

Okay, Sancho, how about "Cannonball"? "...any kind of weather, any time of day, when the rig is ready, he'll be on his way, he'll carry any cargo, he'll go anywhere, just name the destination, and brother he'll be there... Cannonball!"

DING! DING! DING! Congratulations! John, you just one yourself this month's Uncle Tonoose No Prize!

Brock, Have you 1 any of the these Tonoose prizes?;)

$749 sounds like an excellent price after looking at the Edge II prices.:eek!:

The Uncle Tonoose No Prize carries the usual disclaimers: Not open to family members and/or Uncle Tonoose Look-A-Like Contest Winners.

That disqualifies me!

Let me know when you receive the $749 EDG refurb so we can go down to Tanuki (Racoon Dog) Park and test the resolution against the 8x32 SEs (504 and 505) at 64x with your 1951 USAF chart and also test for "spherical aberration" and "full illumination" of the exit pupils. :)

Sorry everyone, this time on the road the past two weeks has left little time for forum work. I will be back on track at the end of the week. The EDG has launched but will not ship until March/April. Some retailers do have limited numbers, but they are limited. I have two EDG bins in my possession and I have been checking them out in the field.

Best,

Mike,

Thanks again for the update - unfortunately yet another wait. Maybe you can give us your impression of whatever updated versions you have. I wouldn't expect you to bite the hand that feeds you but I'm sure you'll have some useful information. I'm a bit disappointed that Nikon hasn't at least updated their USA website to show the updated EDG line. It's very unlikely that I'd be inclined to purchase without more official information or before major retailers have the new line in their inventory.

Better another delay than a "rush to market" like the EDG I, the first production run(s) of which had loose focuser caps.

When I opened the case and took out the 10x42 EDG that Jerry (NDHunter) sent me to try, when I went to focus, the focuser cap just spun! Eventually, I figured out that I had to snap it back on to get a positive grip on the focusing mechanism.

However, every time I lifted the bins to look up at birds in the trees or to use the EDG for stargazing, the cap would come loose again.

It was frustrating and disappointing, considering how much these cost. Nikon replaced his defective model with an updated version with a properly working focuser, but I wonder how many of these defective focuser versions are still out there.

I remembered mention of this issue in some early reviews of EDG prototypes, but I expected the problem to be fully resolved before Nikon started manufacturing them en masse.

I'm not sure why the delay of the EDG II, but if they are doing vigorous testing this time before releasing the new version, that would be a good thing and well worth the wait.

How much faith does one put in a $2000 Nikon, given the problems that have been documented with the first EDG diopters, and Nikon's questionable customer service? I can't imagine why at that price point. I predict the future of the second generation EDG will suffer the same fate as the original.....wait for huge discounts at year end.

I have a question for Mike, which I'm not sure has been asked or answered. WHY did Nikon decide to change the body style of the EDG?

I thought the ergonomics on the EDG I were very good and the optics were excellent (closest roof to a Nikon SE I've tried).

Seems to me that just fixing the focuser knob issue and leaving it at that, would have saved cost, both for the company and the consumer.

I would rather have seen the Premier LXL upgraded with ED glass, so that Nikon fans had a choice of either a closed bridge ED roof or open bridge one. The Premier LXL has more CA than other premium roofs I've tried and could use the ED glass. Considering Chinese ED roofs can be had for less than half the price of the Premier LXL, I think it would have been a prudent move to upgrade the bin and raise the price only marginally ($200-$300).

Given that you can buy a Premier LXL for a little over $1,000 these days (what I paid for my discounted 10x42 LXL, which retailed for $1,400 back then), it would only raise the price back to where it was 6 years ago.

http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&biw=981&bih=567&q=Nikon+10x42+Premier+LXL&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=3264751506177484138&ei=YSBHTfToBMX_lgegivkL&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=result&resnum=4&ved=0CFIQ8wIwAw#

Instead of re-inventing what didn't need re-inventing, upgrading what needed upgrading would have made more sense.

I consider this constructive criticism since I'm a big fan of their binoculars, and I think they make good products, and I like their multi-tier product lines, but I wonder who makes these decisions to issue new bins or upgrade old ones?

The diopter on my 1st generation EDG has performed flawlessly. I have about 10 Nikons (if you know exactly how many you have you don't have enough!;)) purchased, new, refurbished and used and have never had a problem with any of them. I had no problem whatever getting new eye cups for my SE's, EII's at very reasonable prices and I recently got replacement horned eye cups for my EDG after I carelessly lost one. I was not charged for these. Nikon has always been prompt and polite in my dealings with them.
