Andalucian Moths and Butterflies (1 Viewer)

Brian Stone

A Stone chatting
Just back from a few stunning days in Andalucia: 139 bird species plus many butterflies, moths and other insects (I might do other threads on the birds and insects in time). I'll run through the leps here if that's OK. Some need IDing or confirming.

Scarce Bordered Straw (Helicoverpa armigera)?
The Vestal (Rhodometra sacraria)
Swallowtail (Papilio machaon)
Small Copper (Lycaena phlaeas)

Unidentified Skipper, possibly Mallow Skipper (Carcharodus alceae)
Scarce Swallowtail (Iphiclides podalirius) - a bit battered unfortunately
Hummingbird Hawk-moth (Macroglossum stellatarum)

There was a swarm of Hummingbird Hawk-moths at this site with a single Broad-bordered Bee Hawk-moth (Hemaris fuciformis), which unfortunately did not stick around for a photo.

Dear Brian

Very nice set of pictures. Lucky you. Andalucia is great, isn't it. I was there for 6 days in March - got 123 bird species, including 5 new ones for my life list.
I'd say that was the Spanish Gatekeeper (Pyronia bathseba), although I can't imagine you haven't considered that>

We certainly thought it was Spanish Gatekeeper at the time and saw plenty of others that looked typical but I can't find any reference to the extra spot midway near the costa on the underside of the hindwing discal side of the pale band shown by this specimen.

A North African?

Yes, well I deliberately overlooked that, going for the more obvious solution... but of course the smaller Austaut's Algerian Heath has a similar spot on the other side of the postdiscal stripe, but then the stripe's straight. And Dusky Heath also has a spot there, too, but then only a one-spot eye on the forwing, and other things not right, either....
Interesting.

The Tolman/Lewington book shows a twin eye in the forewing of Dusky Heath - not quite as large as in Brian's photo - but everything else looks OK, although they quote flight period from early June as opposed to Spanish Gatekeeper's from April...
