Happy new years birding to you all

Well, I didn't go outside today because the weather was pretty bad, but I've had 11 species in the garden. The usual suspects of course. And as I rightly thought, I saw Herring Gull literally as soon as I opened the curtains when I got up.

1. Herring Gull
2. Town Pigeon

4. House Sparrow
5. Carrion Crow
6. Blackbird
7. Wood Pigeon
8. Great Tit

As soon as I get out anywhere it'll obviously go shooting up!

Cheers,

Joseph

74 today, all but one at Rainham RSPB... not bad for a single site in London!

Bonxie, Serin, Marsh Harrier, Buzzard and 2+ Short-eared Owls were all notable.

112 seen on my local patch today which is a 7 mile radius around the centre of Lowestoft, Suffolk. Highlights included Black-throated Diver, Jack Snipe, Shag, Hen Harrier, Firecrests, Purple Sand, Short-eared Owl and Ruff. Only real miss of the Common stuff was Yellowhammer showing what an amazing patch this is with varied habitats.

In Connecticut for the holidays. Just took the dog outside for a bit. Doing a CBC on Sunday though, so that should give me a boost.

2. American Crow
3. Ring-billed Gull
4. European Starling
5. American Robin
6. Mallard
7. Carolina Wren
8. Red-shouldered Hawk

I THOUGHT I heard Common Raven by the cliffside of this pond (there's a pair that hangs out there), but it was distant and didn't call again. Couldn't tick it for the year... yet.

I made two New Year resolutions: 1) to get out birding more often and 2) to start a 2010 Year List on Bird Forum.

It snowed and sleeted in the morning and so I had to content myself with garden birds early on but I managed a short walk around the town in the afternoon. Whilst we await the 2010 Year List thread, I'll start my year list here:

1. Goldfinch
2. Blue Tit
3. Greenfinch
4. Chaffinch
5. Siskin
6. Great Tit
7. Dunnock
8. Magpie

An attempt to get to 100 in the UK for an idiot who can't tell warblers, female ducks or immature gulls apart, and won't count anything he can't ID himself, can be followed at the link below!

Friday, January 01

For 2009 I went for the Big Year for the first time - geography be damned! (Started in the dry forests of the Sierra Madre del Sur of Mexico, ended up in Southern Ontario in the snow.) It was a fun experience, but rather hectic - lots of weekends spent driving around trying to fill "gaps". Life (read: chores around the house that couldn't be avoided) did interfere with the goal to an extent.

This year, I'll see what I can do working strictly from my home base here in Kitchener - human-powered only. I've done "Big Days" this way before, on Pelee Island (as a fund-raiser) but this will be my first green "Big Year". If nothing else, it will make an interesting contrast with 2009!

Today, just did a walk around the neighbourhood, as the bike has a flat. As I'm in the middle of a town, the possibilities are somewhat restricted...

1. Dark-eyed Junco
2. Northern Cardinal
3. House Sparrow
4. Black-capped Chickadee
5. House Finch
6. Mourning Dove
7. Canada Goose
8. Red-breasted Nuthatch
9. American Crow
10. Red-tailed Hawk
11. White-breasted Nuthatch
12. American Goldfinch
13. Cooper’s Hawk

P.S. Bird #13 was observed right through the window of the front room of our house - having a go at bird #3!

Another couple of hours in the Bois de Boulogne today produced a few more:

23. Mistle Thrush
24. Redwing
25. Grey Heron
26. Nuthatch
27. Kingfisher
28. Pheasant
29. Jay

Still no woodpeckers (had a Black Woody last week); it's only the 2nd day of the year and it's already beginning to feel like pulling teeth. A trip somewhere birdy will be required before long.

DiP

Two more today as I walked home after finishing work at 1pm. Off tomorrow so going to get myself out properly :t:

17: Pied Wagtail
18: Long-tailed Tits ~ absolutely delightful group of 8 in the trees above me as I got home :king: Must be one of THE loveliest birds in the UK

A bit jealous of you people who can find so many species in one day! Totally impossible here in Sweden in the middle of the winter... well, a short visit to Hjälstaviken produced some new species. The last two can be rather tricky in winter... :)

22. Coal Tit
23: Marsh Tit
24. Black Woodpecker
25. Treecreeper
26. Wren
27. Common Buzzard
