31 October

back in Christchurch again after my southeast Asian/Australian trip, I had been doing a bit of random birding over the last week but nothing really had turned up. There were supposed to be some lesser knots at the estuary though, amongst the godwits at their high-tide roost, so I went to have a look. On the 30th there was a ruddy turnstone there but I'd just seen some of those on Rottnest Island so it was already on the year-list. The next day I tried again and as well as the turnstone there was also a sharp-tailed sandpiper and one lesser knot (there had been as many as 27 there a few days before). Still, one is better than none!

BIRDS:
385) Sharp-tailed sandpiper Calidris acuminata
386) Red (Lesser) knot Calidris canutus

HERPTILES:
NZ common skink Oligosoma polychroma

21-22 November

I've been back in Wellington for a couple of weeks, and seeing there had been a trio of vagrant plumed whistling ducks up at Napier since September I thought I'd better go up and see them. I've seen the species before, in Australia, but they're such beautiful ducks one shouldn't really pass up the opportunity to see them again. Its a cheap bus trip up there and I stayed in a backpacker dorm overnight so it didn't cost much money either.

The whisling ducks have settled in a suburban duckpond amongst the mallards and muscovies and domestic geese, but there's also black swans, shovellers, grey teal and a colony of little pied shags there to make them feel at home (very much like the case of the Australian wood duck in Christchurch earlier this year). They really are top-notch ducks.

The next morning before heading back to Wellington I took a wander round the Ahuriri estuary where I found some Pacific golden plovers as well as some other nice birds I've already seen this year like black-fronted dotterels and NZdabchicks.

387) Plumed whistling duck Dendrocygna eytoni
388) Pacific golden plover Pluvialis fulva

26-27 November

heading back down to Christchurch again, I took the ferry from Wellington to Picton from which the only new additions for the year were Buller's and sooty shearwaters. I had been planning on doing the boat trip out of Picton for king shags but I didn't have enough money, so instead just took the bus down to Kaikoura where I ride the albatross boat for free. After depositing my bags at a backpackers I walked out to the seal colony at the end of the peninsula, climbed the hill, and found myself a cirl bunting which allowed me great views as he sang from fence posts and flax flower-stalks. I took the 6am albatross boat the next morning, in the company of a Birdquest group. Sadly it was literally the quietest trip I've ever been on out of Kaikoura and the numbers of birds left me just short of the 400 year total I was anticipating......

BIRDS:
389) Buller's shearwater Puffinus bulleri
390) Sooty shearwater Puffinus griseus
391) Cirl bunting Emberiza cirlus
392) Salvin's mollymawk Thalassarche salvini

397) Hutton's shearwater Puffinus huttoni

MAMMALS:
44) Dusky dolphin Lagenorhynchus obscurus

so that's the end of my year list then. Five hours to go till the end of the year. I like round numbers so was hoping to get to 400 but there you go.
