Moths of May 2010 (1 Viewer)

A huge improvement here too. Milder, around 11 degrees, no wind and FOG. (Seems fog attracts moths!)

Around 80 moths in the trap, some very lively, a few escaped. 23 Shuttle-shaped Darts. A decent number of "new for year" which were:

Udea ferrugalis (Rusty dot pearl)
Evergestis extimalis
Evergestis forficaclis (Garden Pebble)
Buff Ermine (2)
White Ermine
Poplar Hawkmoth (2)
Bright-line Brown-eye (2)
Vine's Rustic
Heart & Dart (2)
Mullein Wave
Orange Footman |=)|
Common Wave
Tawny Shears
Grey Pine Carpet (2)
Common Wainscot
Cabbage Moth
Purple Bar
Oak-tree Pug (I'm pretty sure).

some pugs to sort and a handful of micros to try and work out.

Only one cockchafer:eek!:

Nerine

Had my best night so far lastnight with 13 species comrpising of 25 individuals. Trapping in some really nice woodland with lots of beech, oak, ash, sycamore, scots pine etc. Here are the totals for lastnight (I may have to edit this later because I was using my Waring and Townsend for the first time as opposed to posting pictures straight up [ I think I should have them all right])

Brimstone 1
Least Black Arches 2
Treble Lines 1
Small Phoenix 7
Buff Ermine 1
Flame Carpet 1
Water Carpet 3
Red-Green Carpet 1
Broken-Barred Carpet 2
Lunar Marbled Brown 1
Nut-Tree Tussock 3
Agonopterix arenella 1

1 more left to id on here though

All the best,

Seán

Had the trap out last night thinking that after 2 warm days and a forecast warm night that I would do OK... Wrong! 1 common quaker was all I caught.
Even warmer today so will try again ...

Here in Paddock Wood, West Kent I had the following last night:

Brimstone Moth 1
Light Brown Apple Moth 2
Water Carpet 1 (flew off before I got a photo :-C )
Red Twin-spot Carpet 1
Treble-bar 4
Lesser Treble-bar 1
Pale Tussock 1 melanic
Garden Carpet 1

A pug and quaker are in the id section for confirmation. I'm sure loads of stuff escaped last night as well as whenever I went out last night during the adverts there were moths around. Need to try and modify the trap somehow.

Out and about doing a bird survey today I saw a Nettle-tap (385) as well as a Brimstone butterfly which I don't see to often in these parts.

I re-jigged the trap last night in an attempt to prevent too many escapees. Certainly had a better haul, though a Brimstone that was in there when I went to bed had gone by morning.

Catch as follows:

3 Freyer's Pug
1 Shuttle-shaped Dart
2 Brown Silver-line
2 Powdered Quaker
1 Oak Hook-tip [NFY]
2 Flame Carpet [NFY]
1 Garden Carpet [NFY]
1 Scalloped Hazel [NFY]
1 Waved Umber [NFY]

One other unidentified Pug is in the ID forum.

P.S. Check out the hair-doon the Spectacle, AWESOME!! :-O

I love Spectacles - they are wacky moths.

Here was a great night last night. The trap was heaving, with a dozen or so micros still to identify.

NFY were:

Ephestia parasitella
Tinea trinotella 8
Caloptilia syringella
Argyr trifasciata
Seraphim
Dark Twin-spot Carpet
Clouded Silver
Green Carpet
Waved Umber 4!
Bright-line Brown-eye
Setaceous Hebrew Character 2
Flame Shoulder 2
Small Fanfoot

Other goodies included 8 Brimstone and another Lime Hawk Moth.

But top of the bill was a splendid Marbled Coronet - new for the garden and a rare moth in Hunts - the website shows 3 records in the last 10 years.

Things starting to happen here in the Norwegian highlands too, quite a few NFY-species last night.

Nut-tree Tussock
Scarce Dagger
Silver-Y
May Highflyer
Chocolate-tip
Small Chocolate-tip
Zophodia grossulariella

Another 'northern' speciality for the VC. Two of those are from my garden up the road from you in 2004. Haven't been through last night's catch yet. I wonder if there is one in there?

I did wonder if that red spot on the county map was you Brian ;) The only other records since 2000 have been in St Neots and near Woodwalton from what I can see. Certainly a real looker, and the last but one moth out of the trap so a lovely surprise. I'll submit the photos to the website, as the species isn't illustrated yet.
