I had same thought!

...and finally got around to comparing the data in tiira for June 2017 vs 2018 which seems to indicate this year is low compared to last year...if I get the time I'll try to go back further as this isn't very scientific I know :)

Edit...had more time than I thought...last 10 years worth of data for the month of June: just number of observations and number of individuals within those observations

A lot of variation there, must be to do with the abundance of food, any ringing recoveries?

None that I am aware of.

Probably significant that in the years of big numbers the number of observations increases markedly - meaning, like anywhere, once folk hear there are exceptional numbers (2017, 2013, 2010) they get out there looking (#Obs increases equally markedly) and report more...?

Anyway...this year looks unexceptional based on those numbers

Interesting that 2013/14 and 2017/18 were years with Crossbill irruptions into Germany. Many were breeding in winter then... Also unusually numerous observations of Parrot Crossbills including breeding attempt (2014) and first successful breeding (2018).

Seems June numbers in Finland are a good indicator for numbers in Germany in the following month.
