Is it known whether young starlings are born with the ability to fly in formation with others, or do they learn it from other starlings?
 
Innate, I would have thought, though I doubt there’s much solid evidence one way or the other on the subject. Dto with respect to the synchronized flight of sandpipers.
 
Hi Henning, thanks for the link! Very interesting. As for the original question, maybe born with an innate ability to learn!
