I had a short list of 6, and then picked the one I thought would be the hardest to achieve the photograph of.

Well done all the Photographers and Ian for putting it together.

Wow! Its the first time that I'm casting a vote and I must admit its far more difficult than it initially looks. There are just so many fantastic photos out there! Wishing all participants the best of luck and thank you for sharing all those terrific photos with us!

Herman

I agree with those who want to be able to vote for 3 or 5 birds - it would better reflect the top 20 picks. I narrowed it down to 5 and was disappointed to learn that one of my top five did not have any votes for it. It may have been second or third choice for many poeple. Also, with 95 pictures and such an open category, it's very difficult to pick just one. I would have been happy to be the photographer of any of these. Thanks to everyone who posts, not just in this competition but in the gallery as well. It certainly makes my day.

Quite a task choosing! Congratulations everyone on a fine competition.

Looks to me that the DSLRs have the edge these days - not so many digiscoped shots around. Don't know what conclusions you can draw from this...

Not until the first round of voting is complete at 22.28 hrs on Friday 18th March.

It would be unfair to include comments before then as they may influence the voting.

Surely open voting influences the result more than comments!! Who is going to vote for something with no votes now? My vote would change if I voted now, from one with 5 votes to what will be the eventual winner.

Don't forget with the voting booth this month is just the first round. The photos attracting the top 20 highest votes then go forward to Zeiss pick the eventual winner. No overall winner is being decided here, it's back to a level playing field after this round.

Comments added to each photo prior to casting a vote would be distinctly unfair if one attracts 30 and another just 2. Personally I view the photos on merit to select which gets my vote, rather than checking which has already got the highest number of votes.

I fully agree with you on this, Ian. I vote for the shot that jumps out at me the most, that pleases me the most. Sometimes it's the one that wins.... 98% of the time, it's NOT but it IS the one I wish would win. I can't bring myself to vote for something just because most others did. That just doesn't seem right.

That seems like a good reason to allow people to vote for more than one entry. The results of voting for one out of 100 entries is not likely to represent the collective assessment of the top 20 entries. To draw an extreme example, a photo that is the first choice of two people and the second choice of no one is clearly less popular than another photo that is the second choice of 50 people, but the first photo would win the vote 2-0. With relatively few votes spread over so many entries, two votes might be enough to put it in the top 20, while the more popular photo would not make the cut. If people were allowed to vote for, say, their top five choices, the results for the top few choices would probably be similar to those from only one vote, but the results for the rest of the top 20 should more accurately reflect what members thought. Maybe. But if that is the case, then the number of comments it attracts should make no difference either.

I too like the idea of having more than one vote per member, it would be nice to have three votes each and rate them as first second and third. However the software we use only permits either just the one vote or alternatively limitless votes which would be a bit daft.

An alternative would be to have votes sent in by email listing their three choices but that would remove a large part of the member participation of using the voting booth polling - apart from a lot of extra work.

A compromise is the system we use.

Am I missing something here? I can't see other people's votes until I've voted - which seems to be a good system.

I have a question. Do Zeiss will really chose a picture where their stuff was not used? I assume that the winning picture will be on their publicity, but if I look to the current top 20, 16 were done with DSLR (13 of them with Canon). Only 2 of those 20 pictures actually used a Zeiss scope!

Odd question, may have been relevant if Canon or Nikon were sponsoring the competition, but Zeiss??

Rest assured, the equipment used to take the images is totally unimportant in the judging.

I had no idea one could check to see how many votes any photo has until after one had voted...!? Barbara

I think that the one vote system should be OK if enough people vote.

It will be fascinating to see, though, whether Zeiss choose the most popular photo or not. They will have different priorities to many of the voters and anyone interested in perhaps selling photos in the future could do worse than to study the image they choose very carefully - I know I will!
