Took this pic last week and noticed the middle cormorant is different. Is it some kind of anomaly or is he a different species? Usually we get the Double-Crested Cormorant here, dont know of any others.

Hi Janine,
It's a juv/1st-w Double-crested Cormorant. Some birds of this age can show this much white on the upper breast and neck, contrasting with a dark belly(the reverse is usually the case in Great Cormorant, which would also be much larger than the other 2 DCC's in the photos). The only Irish record involved a bird which looked much like this.
The yellow lower mandible, head structure and orange facial skin are also all "classic" Double-crested,as is the lack of feathering in the gular area(the "chin").

Instructive photos, Janine - thanks. It'll make one easier to spot when it turns up in the harbour outside my office!

Hi Bluetail,
While the other two birds in the photo would be identifiable over here, one like the pale bird would be a gift!Aim to search for one locally:as most birders here saw the 1995 bird, then I'd hazard a guess that very few of them bother looking at Cormorants!
