Hooded Crow for the DB (1 Viewer)

Picture taken in Iran (21-01-2005) in Golestan National Park using Canon 20D with 300 mm L IS + 1.4 extender.
This species used to be a rather common winter visitor in the Netherlands, but in the last 10? years it has become much rarer even though it breeds fairly close to the border.

They've also all but stopped wintering in eastern England. Possibly because the boundary zone Carrion/Hooded is moving north and east so Hoodies have to come further, possibly becase increased human-provided food means they don't need to migrate any more

Thanks Jaap, lovely shot and they are great Crow to see, unfortunately it's an ssp. so doesn't have a dedicated slot in the database.
It would be nice to see uploaded to the main gallery, it will then turn up in a search.

regards,
Andy

Yep, you're right, it one of the latest splits. We'll have to add another slot.
Thanks.
It's hard to keep up with all those splits and lumps!
About the changing distribution I was told that the political changes in eastern Europe since 1990 and consequent changes in waste management in former Eastern Germany had something to do with it. On the other hand climatic change has also been mentioned, but that seems to be the easiest answer to most questions nowadays ;)

Andy,
Slot created and this particular bird has been linked to the main photo frame. The only photo that I have seen of race pallescens which makes it interesting. I'll go through the whole genus Corvus later tonight to see if it is current.

It was about time as well this one got its own slot.

Just amended the title in the database to make it a capital "H" on the Hooded.
