The Tuesday bird walk went to Deep Bay. The morning was foggy but the wind was calm and the water was like glass. The highlights included having great views of three Brandt's Cormorants swimming on the water along with Double-crested Cormorants and Pelagic Cormorants. We were able to compare the three species. There were large numbers of Surf Scoters, White-winged Scoters, Black Scoters and Long-tailed Ducks on the calm water quite far out from the shore. We watched a Common Loon just offshore having a difficult time catching and digesting a large fish. Several small flocks of Trumpeter Swans flew over head. We spotted three Pigeon Guillemots in winter plumage on the water.
Eleven birders saw and heard the following fifty-three species:
Canada Geese, Trumpeter Swan, Mute Swan, American Wigeon, Mallard, Northern Pintail, Greater Scaup, Harlequin Duck, Surf Scoter, White-winged Scoter, Black Scoter, Long-tailed Duck, Bufflehead, Common Goldeneye,Common Merganser, Pacific Loon, Common Loon, Horned Grebe, Red-necked Grebe, Brandt's Cormorant, Double-crested Cormorant, Pelagic Cormorant, Great Blue Heron, Bald Eagle, Cooper's Hawk, Black Turnstone,Bonaparte's Gull, Thayer's Gull, Glaucous-winged Gull, Mew Gull, Pigeon Guillemot, Rock Pigeon, Eurasian Collared-Dove, Belted Kingfisher, Northern Flicker, Steller's Jay, Northwestern Crow, Common Raven, Chestnut-backed Chickadee, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Golden-crowned Kinglet, American Robin, European Starling, Spotted Towhee, Song Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrow, Golden-crowned Sparrow, Dark-eyed Junco, Red-winged Blackbird, Brewer's Blackbird, House Finch, Pine Siskin and House Sparrow.
