Not much time available to me currently unfortunately so a very slow start to the year, but I'm hoping to get in some overseas trips this year (unlike last year!) so fingers crossed for a good number.
January 1, all quickly seen round Hokitika during a short break in a storm (!):
1) Red-billed gull Larus novaehollandiae (I no longer split this as L. scopulinus as there seems no good reason to do so)
2) European blackbird Turdus merula
3) European starling Sturnus vulgaris
4) Southern black-backed gul (aka kelp gull) Larus dominicanus
5) House sparrow Passer domesticus
6) Black shag (aka great cormorant) Phalacrocorax carbo
7) Banded dotterel Charadrius bicinctus
8) Mallard Anas platyrhynchos
9) Eurasian skylark Alauda arvensis
10) Song thrush Turdus philomelos
