This project has hit a sight hiatus since the last catch on the 10th. Woodpigeons have invaded and are unsettling the linnet, and opportunities have been limited by the weather. On the 16th we failed to take any catch. Last week conservation work took priority as I had the free loan of a digger to do some pond maintenance. Things had been looking good earlier in the week, but yesterday the bird scarer on the neighbouring rape crop packed up, hundreds of pigeons moved in with 30 on the rape bait where we catch. Today there were few linnets, and very unsettled. The scarer has been fixed, so here is hoping for next visit.

A pleasant morning for a change, emphasized by having the first really prolonged skylark song I have heard this year.

Over 80 small finches present early on with modest numbers just starting to feed when 8 greylag passed low overhead. I couldn't believe this was what spooked the finches, and as the goose cacophony started to lessen an almighty kee-ke-ke-kee became obvious. The two male kestrel were squabling, perhaps over the female, all perched on the next door telegraph pole. The linnets are normally un-worried about a kestrel, or buzzard, but I guess three like that was too much.

Mainly forgetting corvids, gulls, non-natives, pigeons and tits.

Many thanks to all concerned, Mike.

Wind prevented us from mist netting, so we took the opportunity to whoosh at another feed site where a flock of brambling, amongst others, has collected.

The new owners of the neighbouring estate have stopped (pheasant) shooting as of the end of this season (31st January). Obviously feeding stopped then and a large remnant is raking around, which explains why so much feed has been disappearing here. Considerable disruption this morning from 13 pheasant and two red-legged partridge. Will probably have to give up catching here for this winter.
