Hi all

I did this last year and so here we are again. Predict your 1st ten and then let us know how you go.

My predicted first ten species of 2008 are:

Black Redstart
Monk Parakeet
Yellow-legged Gull
White Wagtail
Black-headed Gull
Crested Tit
Firecrest
Robin
Collared Dove
Sardinian Warbler

Happy New Year!

My predictions:

Barn owl
Burrowing owl
Tropical screech owl
Blue black grassquit
Tropical flycatcher
Kiskadee
Picazuro pigeon
House sparrow
Eared dove
Sayaca tanager

I go for

House Crow
Common Hawk Cuckoo
House Sparrow
Black Kite
Barn Swallow
Black Drongo
Little Egret
Great Egret
Indian Pond Heron
Pacific Golden Plover

(Maybe you can notice that I'm not in Switzerland at the moment;))

The likeliest first ten birds of 2008:

American Crow
Black-capped Chickadee
White-breasted Nuthatch
Mourning Dove
Rock Pigeon
European Starling
Blue Jay
House Sparrow
Red-tailed Hawk
American Goldfinch

Unforunately the forecast for tomorrow doesn't look very promising....more snow is on the way, which will likely curtail my plans for spending most of the day driving about to various conservation areas. :(

First ten should be:
Blackbird
Wood Pigeon
Pigeon
Robin
Black-headed Gull
Crow
Rook
Magpie
House Sparrow
Pheasant
.. not necessarily in that order.
Alan

I think:
Chaffinch,
Great tit,
Blue tit,
Robin
Blackbird
Magpie
Black headed gull
Pied Wagtail
Mallard
Coot.

What it was: (ill edit post it asap, 4:30 till 2008 :D)

Assuming I'll be in no fit state to recognise (or remember any Owls calling on the way home in the morning)...

Herring Gull
Starling
Blue Tit
Great Tit
Robin
Chaffinch
Wood Pigeon
Pheasant
Goldfinch
Greenfinch

It's got to be these (in no order):

Starling
House Sparrow
Magpie
Greenfinch
Chaffinch
Dunnock
Robin
Blue Tit
Feral Pigeon
Rook

My predictions:

Northern Saw-whet Owl (going to give it a shot just after midnight, we'll see!)
Dark-eyed Junco
House Finch
American Goldfinch
Mountain Chickadee
Pygmy Nuthatch
California Quail
Black-billed Magpie
Hairy Woodpecker
Northern Flicker

Unless I manage to sneak away and do some birding at a nearby location at first light instead of just birding from home. If so, my species list should change.

Looking forward to 2008!

Depending on whether it's chucking it down with rain (as is forecast for the NE) I'll be going out at approx 7am as soon as hubby gets home from nightshift and I can nick the car ;) to tick off *hopefully* Barn and Tawny Owl in the Number's 1 and 2 spots :t: Both are fairly easy to get around here :king:

But if it's raining and the owls are unlikely to be showing it'll be a quick walk up to Hulne Park so I reckon it'll be....

Blackbird - Blue Tit - Robin - Starling - House Sparrow - BHG - Jackdaw - WoodPigeon - Chaffinch - Rook.

Later on I'll be getting a few coastal birds too as the North Northumberland Bird Club are having their annual January 1st Outing at Beadnell :t: Fingers crossed for Great Northern Divers, Slavonian Grebes and other such juicies :-O

My prediction would be (in no order):-

Black-headed Gull
Woodpigeon
Starling
Blackbird
Goldfinch
Greenfinch
Dunnock
Blue Tit
Great Tit
Chaffinch

Claire

Here's to 2008!!!

Off to Potteric Carr tomorrow so my first 10:

Bittern
Water Rail
Willow Tit
Kingfisher
Goldcrest
Great Spotted Woodpecker
Lapwing
Siskin
Robin
Blackbird

Well here's hoping!!!!
Good luck to you all in 2008

Here in heatwave struck Melbourne (41 deg yesterday, much the same today), I reckon

Common Mynah
Starling
Blackbird
Spotted Turtledove (don't you love it how the first 4 are all ferals?)
Australian Magpie
Little Wattlebird
Crested Pigeon
Masked Lapwing
Sulfur-crested Cockatoo
Rainbow Lorikeet

I'd need to list 20 species really to stand a chance of getting it anywhere near right, but OK here's ten.

Dunnock
House Sparrow
Blackbird
Robin
Chaffinch
Great Tit
Blue Tit
Carrion Crow
Wood Pigeon
Collared Dove
Magpie

Other strong contenders to make the list would be
Jackdaw
Herring Gull
BH Gull
Goldfinch
Greenfinch
Coal tit
Nuthatch
GSW
Wren
SongThrush
