Here we go again with another year list. I don't expect to come close to 2010's total of 781 but we'll have to see what happens with travel this year.

Jan 4, Long Reef and Dee Why Beach, Sydney

The plan for today was to spend some time at Long Reef and nearby Dee Why Beach and Lagoon. Heading to Long Reef initially the tide was to high to allow walking out onto the reef however with threatening storm clouds and a high wind there were plenty of seabirds about. Predominantly Wedge-tailed Shearwaters but the highlight was a single Buller's.

104. Wedge-tailed Shearwater
105. Short-tailed Shearwater
106. Pomarine Skua
107. Sooty Oystercatcher
108. Red-necked Stint
109. Fluttering Shearwater
110. Sooty Shearwater
111. Buller's Shearwater
112. Red-necked Stint

After some time we walked around the headland and down to Dee Why Lagoon and the beach.

113. Australasian Shoveller
114. Hoary-headed Grebe
115. Nankeen Kestrel
116. New Holland Honeyeater

We returned back to Long Reef later after the tide had dropped sufficiently to get out onto the reef and more birds had arrived the highlight being a Little Penguin.

117. Pacific Golden Plover
118. Ruddy Turnstone
119. Grey-tailed Tattler
120. Little Penguin

Images are of a Red Wattlebird feeding a juvenile Pacific Koel, Variegated Fairywren, Sooty Oystercatcher, Australian Pipit and Little Black Cormorant

Firstly thanks to the person who ranked this thread since my last post.

My first foray into the central catchment for 2011 was fairly quiet with common birds until I'd pretty much finished my couple of hours when two of the very rare resident Scarlet Minivets flashed overhead and landed just visible atop a tall tree - new for not only 2011 but my Singapore list.

Jan 31, Summit Doi Inathon, Chiang Mai, Thailand

The birding day finished with a drive up through near white-out cloud/fog and drizzle that cleared around the 43km milestone to the summit of Doi Inathon and the highest point in Thailand at 2565masl.

Due to the poor conditions only two new birds were seen on the way up from a road side stop just before the fog lifted.

282. Mountain Bulbul
283. Spectacled Barwing

Having reached the summit we did a couple of laps of the Sphagnum Bog trail before walking over the summit to the view point by the telecom tower which showed nothing but cloud below! As expected plenty of friendly birds but hardly any good shots due to poor light and in some cases the birds being too close!

284. Flavescent Bulbul
285. Hill Blue Flycatcher
286. Bar-throated Minla
287. Ashy-throated Warbler
288. Rufous-winged Fulvetta
289. Davison's Leaf Warbler
290. Silver-eared Laughingthrush
291. Green-tailed Sunbird
292. Mrs. Gould's Sunbird
293. Dark-backed Sibia
294. Yellow-bellied Fantail
295. White-browed Shortwing
296. Aberrant Bush Warbler
297. Martens's Warbler
298. Dark-sided Thrush

299. Ashy Wood Pigeon
