Clean woodpecker feeder? (1 Viewer)

My woodpecker feeder has been up for about a month, with one downy a regular morning visitor for around three weeks (maybe two downies, but never at the same time). Is it necessary to clean this kind of feeder?

Hi Mr. Jones!

It sort of up to the feeder you use and the type of bird food and the weather ;)

If the feeder keeps the seed dry then I would clean the feeder out every few months. If the seed gets wet, then I dump the seed on the ground to dry out and it also is welcomed by the ground feeders.

Well, it's a suet feeder, with two cakes in it. The food is same age as the feeder - about a month. But the downy keeps coming back, and the suet doesn't smell bad/rancid.

If it doesn't smell rancid, I would just check it daily for mold. When mine get moldy, I toss em. Doesn't happen often but occasionally I'll pick up a brand they aren't crazy about and I've gotten a few of them to last a month or more before they go bad.
