I am unable to id this butterfly: seen at Whixall Moss in Shropshire on July 18, 2008. Unfortunately this is the only image I managed to get in the wind.

The only butterflies I was able to definitely id at the time were Ringlet, Meadow brown, and Large skipper. But, being Whixall various species I would have trouble with could have been present.

Has anybody got the skills to sort it out for me?

Thanks,
Hugh

Looks like a Meadow Brown to me: the light outer half of the underwing is a pretty good ID feature.
Large Heath (which I would be after there!) has a white line and obvious eyes on its hindwing.

Hello Hugh,

To be honest I would have preferred a picture that was more in focus, it's almost certainly a butterfly, but to be frank I'd rather not give an opinion.

Have you any other pictures?

Harry

No more images.
I will happily go with it being a Meadow Brown as that is what I suspected it was.
