Summer 2015 I fixed a nest box to an East-facing wall of our house, I checked the box November of that year and was not surprised to find no evidence of occupation. Winter 5/16 there was no activity and checking it November 2016 it was still clean. No activity summer 2016, but during the winter 16/17 there were droppings both on the floor under the box and in the box, I lifted the box down in February and wiped out with water (unsure as to use disinfectant or not), the box remained unoccupied through the year. Winter 17/18 showed much more activity due to the presence of droppings, I washed the box with water at the beginning of March. Mid March we noticed a Blue Tit coming and going with nesting material and this frenzied action continued for about 2 weeks, at the end of this time we have had no further action (21st April), we are unsure as to what action to take!
1. Is there any chance the box will be used?
2. How long do we wait before opening the box to inspect it?
3. I rigged the box to fit a camera, there is a clip in the top lid for the camera and a large hole in the side (covered with diffused plastic) to allow light, will it be possible to rig the camera if they return?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Steve and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators.

I've moved your post to the nest box forum, as I think you will get the more specialised information in there that you required. Also I subscribed you to the thread so you get an email with any replies and can find your way here easily.

Personally, I'd leave the box untouched until the autumn, but then I've no experience with nest boxes at all.

Meantime, I hope you enjoy your time here with us.

Welcome!

You shouldn't take any action until the end of October. We have blue tits using our nest box and we leave it and them well alone.

I think, reading various posts, that it is quite common. Just wait and see what happens.

Do come back and let us know how you get on, please.
