A 15. hour Stint today, just a warm up for the real spring8-P.
The weather forecasters got it totally wrong. I arrived at 5.15 am with strong SE winds and heavy rain that continued for the next 5 hours or so. If the forecasters had got it right there would have been even more of us on site early doors. Once again though all the action was in the morning and as the weather improved the birds disappeared, well at at least the migrants.

As our attention turns to summer migrants, one thing that often gets overlooked at this time of year is the departure of the winter thrushes. The most recent sightings for both Redwing and Fieldfare is the 26th March; if anyone has encountered either species after this date could they post of this thread or make a note in the log book. Ta.

Hi John - are you sure the ring was white? I cant find a scheme to match on cr-birding but the combination in very similar to a yellow ringed bird T7L2 which Craig saw in mid March which he traced back to a Polish programme.

Yesterday's Sandwich Tern occurrence was the earliest date the species has been recorded at Upton Warren, surpassing one that passed through the Flashes then the Moors Pool last year on the 10th April. It is also only the second instance from the 30+ accepted records of an occurrence greater than two birds but falls a long way short of the reserve's record flock of 28 birds present at the Moors Pool, then the Flashes, before heading south on the 29th September 1988 (a record of three birds in 2008 was unfortunately not submitted to the County Recorder).

Dave J reports from the Flashes this morning:

23 Avocets, 2 Curlew, 4 LRP, Common Gull (1w), Blackcap, Meadow Pipit, 14 Shoveler, 2 Teal

Late night closing at Flashes

We are now in the Summer opening hours at the Flashes.
Which means the SAILING CENTRE car park is open until 8pm.
Tonight I will be on site to close up which could mean 8.15pm.
However on the days that I am not on site, the car park will be closed smack on 8pm. So please do not stay later in the car park if you do, park safely outside.
If the sailing centre is going to be open later than 8pm we will do our utmost to let you know.
B :)John

First time on the Forum

Hi everyone
This is my first post. I've been an occasional visitor to Upton Warren since 1985 but I hope to have a bit more time on my hands in the near future so will be down more often.

I was on a walk around the footpath on the right hand side of the flashes yesterday when I came across a dead and decaying fox right by the fox-proof fence. Obviously the fence is doing its job!!
