I checked some snow-covered farm fields on my way home from work and picked up a new bird for the year.

A very rare visitor to my garden. I have only had one since 2011 but 4 Siskins have just dropped onto my feeders (1 male and 3 female) before flying off.

This morning I went over to the eastern panhandle of West Virginia to try to find some birds that aren’t found in this part of the state. I had some good luck and added three species to my Year List.

My main target, though, was a male Painted Bunting that has been coming to a feeder at a private residence for the last couple of months. After about 15 minutes, he showed up, giving great looks. It was a West Virginia state lifer (number 278), but it wasn’t a new bird for the year, because I saw one in Panama in February.
