Utah (Uinta & SLC), Summer 2010

At the end of July, I spent 4 days at Lost Creek Campground, on the Mirror Lake Scenic Highway through the Uinta Mountains. (Got a bit altitude sick, because it's at 10,200 feet!) I found the birding fairly hard but saw quite a few birds around the campground: Brewer's Sparrows, Chipping & White-crowned Sparrows, Red Crossbill, Pine Grosbeaks, Dark-eyed Juncos, Am. Robins, Mountain Chickadees, Yellow-rmped Warblers, Warbling Vireos, Hermit Thrushes, Gray Jays, Clark's Nutcrackers etc.

An hour on Soapstone Basin Road was good. We stopped outside the YMCA camp which is only 100 yards down SB Road the highway: Hairy WP, Red-naped Sapsucker, MacGillivray's Warbler.

We went to Rock Cliff section of Jordanelle State Park. Should be a great birding site - but not at noon on August 1st, particularly in a year that has caused most of the site's wetlands to dry up! Saw Lesser Goldfinch and 3 Common Nighthawks, though.

Later that same day went to Brighton. The lake walk was very, very busy with visitors. Few birds: Mallards, Osprey, Red-breasted Nuthatches, Black-headed Grosbeaks, Barn/Tree/Cliff Swallows, White-crowned Sparrows. The little street next to the cafe/store had a house with lots of feeders: 3 Hairy Woodpeckers, Pine Siskins, Black-headed Grosbeaks, Cassin's Finches, Black-chinned Hummingbirds. Best place to bird in the area!

Next morning had two hours at Antelope Island. Too early for Garr Ranch (opens at 9:00) but saw a lot. Causeway had Eared Grebes, Red-necked Phalarpes, Willets, Black-necked Stilts, Long-billed Curlews, California & Franklin's Gulls, Yellow-headed Blackbirds.

The road to Garr Ranch had bison, antelopes, coyote plus: Chukar, Ring-necked Pheasant, Am Pipits, Sage Thrashers, W Meadowlarks, Common Ravens, Am Kestrel, N Harrier, Lark Sparrows.
