Björn Bergenholtz
(former alias "Calalp")
While following the foot-paths of Swinhoe I came across a certain Mr. Caine, so here´s some additional details (and a birth year!) on this guy commemorated in the eponym...
caineana as in:
• the invalid "Coturnix caineana" SWINHOE 1865 (here)
= the British diplomat George Whittingham Caine (1832–187?), British Consular service (from 1851 until 1872) ... and onwards.
George Whittingham Caine was born in 1832, in India. At the age of 19 he joined the British Consular service in Hong Kong in 1851, in 1860 he became the British Consul in Swatow , thereafter British Consul in Hankow, resigned in 1872, moved to Sydney Australia ... was arrested (for embezzlement*), sent back to China, and sentenced to two years imprisonment in 1873 ... but if he died the year after, in 1874 (as have been claimed) is unknown to me.
Not to confuse with his father Colonel William Caine, whose full name was William Hull Caine (1799–1871), British officer in India from 1815, judicial official, civil servant, resident in Hong Kong 1841-1859, Colonial Secretary of Hong Kong from 1854 to 1859 .etc., etc..
Further details on his father (and the Son/s), here, also note the long and lingering comments below the blog entry itself.
For what it´s wort, if of any use?
Björn
