Ken has a point - if it was a 'red-tailed' then Persian rather than Kurdish would make sense.

But why is this not a Mourning Wheatear? The combination of whitish underparts with obvious rich buff rear belly and undertail point to that IMO. Can't see where thoughts of Maghreb come from.

Has it really got "obvious rich buff rear belly and undertail",or is it staining,or trick of the light? I can't see why it's not Finch's.
Pete.

My friend in Cyprus (ex Cyprus Bird Recorder) has seen the bird, it's not staining. Originally some thought Finch's but the feeling is that it is indeed a Red tailed of some sort. Camp out there is divided between Kurdish or Maghreb.

There's a flight shot posted on the Global Rare Bird Alert Facebook page which should dismiss thoughts of Persian/Kurdish.

Yes, it does. Hopefully the birders on Cyprus can get back to finding a real "goody", not that Finch's isn't a bad bird.
