Moths of April 2010 (1 Viewer)

After a few disappointing nights, numbers in the trap were back up to the mid 30s. Mostly the usual suspects but Diurnea fagella was NFG - a male of the dark morph.

It was the first warm spring day yesterday with temperatures reaching 12 degrees. I went out and saw the first butterflies of the year. I thought I would see maybe one Brimstone, but I saw 7 Brimstones and 6 Small Tortoiseshells! That made my day (or month)!

Last night was the best so far this year with moths too. 23 moths of 7 species. No new for the year, but nice moths anyway. I trapped until 23.00 and the temp went down to 5 degrees. I had my both traps running but my old one with an 160W MBT bulb only attracted one moth.

10 Yellow Horned
4 March Moth
3 Pale Brindled Beauty
2 Chestnut
2 Clouded Drab (please see the attached and correct me if I am wrong)
1 Dotted Chestnut
1 Spring Usher

The first 3-figure night of the year here last night with 103 moths. Common Quaker is still by far the commonest with 70 or so, but the first Lead-coloured Drab for the year was nice, along with Twin-spot Quaker and a pale Diurnea fagella.

Diurnea fagella

Very quiet here in West Kent at the moment, usual suspects apart from this moth which I'm fairly sure is Diurnea fagella but would like confirmation please.

At last I am into double figures with:
Oak Beauty 2
Hebrew Character 4
March Moth 3
Clouded Drab 1
Small Quaker 4
plus two to ID in the ID thread

3rd April

Plenty of moths but twin-spotted quaker was the only nfy.
Clouded drabs as variable as ever. A few photos attached.

A worn Dotted Border last night was new for me. Otherwise more of the same. The nights look to be cold for the next few days - here's hoping for some Spring weather!

I had a fantastic haul last night despite cold-ish conditions. 59 moths:

31 Small Quaker
10 Common Quaker
7 Chestnut
7 Hebrew Character
2 Clouded Drab
1 Twin-spotted Quaker
Despite the numbers, only one new species of Early Grey was found, and my camera is out of action so no photo unfortunately.

New for me last night was an Early Grey - happy with that in my small haul of moths, I am hoping for less wind and a tadge warmer.

Like Sean, I had a good haul last night - perhaps 100 moths by 11 p.m. Every single one was an Orthosia sp! gracilis (Powdered quaker) was new for year.

First time I've ever been complimented on a roof-tile!
I usually use leaves but I'm a bit bored with ivy and there's not much else available in our garden right now!

Looks to be an old one due to the pitted surface so probablly started life as sanded rather than smooth, might be a Redland or perhaps a Marley............oh right sorry its the moth Iv'e to look at;)

Last evening was productive with three new for year:
early thorn
brindled pug
dotted chestnut.
The last, if confirmed, will be a new one for my garden list. I'll post photos when it brightens up a bit. (The slate is back by popular request for the supposed dotted chestnut.)
Early tooth-striped and oak beauty completed the non-Orthosia list. Plus a peacock butterfly roosting in my shed.
Interesting to compare my female early thorn with Benny's male!
