Chris in France's 2006 Year List

I resumed serious birdwatching in March 2005 and managed 193 species (in Europe and North America) by the end of the year. The same list also happens to be my life list. I hope to do better this year and to motivate me towards this objective I've decided to keep my year list here. I will mark lifers with (*). So, since the 1st January, I have seen the following birds:

1. Great Tit
2. Blue Tit

Just got back from a month away in the UK with a flying visit to Lisbon (very limited opportunity for birding) sandwiched in the middle and need to update my year list. First, however, I've only now realized that I previously omitted the ubiquitous Rock Dove (Feral Pigeon) seen early in January, so I'll start with that. Lifer: (*)

51. Rock Dove (Feral Pigeon) on local patch

52. Blackheaded Gull
53. Great Black-backed Gull
54. Herring Gull
55. Mute Swan
56. Ruddy Turnstone (*)
all at Whitby Harbour, North Yorkshire

57. Northern Lapwing
58. Common Gull
59. Tufted Duck
60. Common Redshank (*)
61. Dunlin (*)
62. Canada Goose
63. Common Goldeneye (*)
64. Common Pochard
65. Northern Pintail (*)
66. Pink-footed Goose (*)
67. Little Grebe
all at Scaling Dam, North Yorkshire

68. Redwing (*) (at Commondale, North Yorkshire)
69. Red Grouse (*) (on moor above Commondale)
70. Common Pheasant (at Castleton, North Yorkshire)
71. Eurasian Oystercatcher (*) (at Runswick Bay, North Yorkshire)
72. Eurasian Sparrowhawk (at Durham Tees Valley Airport)

73. Lesser Black-backed Gull (at Cais do Sodre, Lisbon)
(NB Yellow-legged Gull previously listed here now deleted and following numbers altered accordingly)
74. European Green Woodpecker (on local patch)

I also saw the M.a.yarrelli subspecies of the White Wagtail, plus an as yet unidentified sparrow-like bird in Lisbon which I will add as soon as a positive ID has been made from photographs taken at the time.
