Are there recognised locations to see hawfinches in Ireland?
I have heard mention of counties Down, Cork and Limerick having hawfinches before. Is this the case?

According to Eric Dempsey and Michael O´Clery in "The Complete Guide to Ireland´s Birds", they used to be a regular winter visitor to the East, but now turn up as rare vagrants, pretty much anywhere. There was, apparently, an influx in the autumn of 1988, large numbers seen at migration points in the SW. The last report I remember noticing was, I think, in Cork last year sometime. If you find one, do let me know....I´ve never seen one. Best of Luck!

I twitched a hawfinch at tollymore park on 1st january last year. The bird favoured the conifers near the entrance. Showed best when on the ground feeding under the trees. There was also at least one bird at inch abbey around the same time (maybe earlier). The inch bird was feeding in the cemetary under the yew trees. You want a cold snap on the continent to bring them in normally (it was minus 30 in berlin that december). Since we dont get so many cold snaps these days we don't get so many birds but i would recommend tollymore. The mandarin ducks there are considered wild (ie tickable) and the jays are very showey...

Hi Breffni,

Where is Tollymore Park?

Hawfinches don't breed here and the ones we get rarely in winter are Scandinavian birds as the UK ones are sedentary and don't migrate. The 3 at Inch abey were well twitched that year, but there have not been a lot since, problem is they are easily overlooked and can turn up anywhere.
