I got a second chance, to catch up with what I think is the same small wader from 21/07/18, that at the time, I thought was a 'possible' very early Curlew Sandpiper........but with much better views this time around,.......I now know, that I was definitely wrong!

This bird is without doubt a Dunlin, but which race of Dunlin it is,....I'm not 100% sure.

Having watched numerous videos, and searched through many different articles, ( which at times, were almost overwhelming in detail ), the most likely race, would appear to be calidris alpina.

I'm certainly glad that I found this bird, because It's given me a great opportunity to improve my knowledge of the many variations of Dunlin, and a sharp reminder, of just how easy it is, to mistake this species for something rarer.

*** Earlier this morning, I saw, what I originally thought was an American Mink, but after researching the internet, what I actually saw, was in fact a POLECAT, which I believe is a BAP mammal species, and also a species of conservation concern, .........should I report this sighting, to a relevant conservation body? ***..........any help and advice regarding this matter, would be very much appreciated.

COFNOD would also be very interested in the Polecat, since it is in Wales (https://www.cofnod.org.uk/Recording). My wife and I saw one running across a minor road in the Bryn Alyn area of the Clwydians earlier this year and Cofnod seemed delighted. It's really the Ferret that can be confused with Polecat, though, isn't it? -rather than Mink. Escaped ferrets used to come onto the Connah's Quay Reserve regularly until the Power Station tightened up security, but they were usually so tame and unafraid of people that they couldn't be mistaken for a "wild" animal.

Hi Glennmanc...........thanks very much for your reply.............

I'm not great when it comes to mammal ID, so when I reported my sighting of the Polecat to the Mammal Society, I noted in my report to them, that I felt that I was of only limited experience.

However......after carefully considering all aspects of both escaped ferret/polecat, and, genuine wild Polecat, I'm very confident that the mammal that I saw, was indeed a genuine wild Polecat, and if familiarity/confidence with humans is a guideline, this particular Polecat, was away in a 'flash', once it saw me.
