New 32mm Trinovid binoculars (1 Viewer)

I posted a couple pics of them in the Biggest Week thread in the main forum too GG.

Yes, thanks again for all of the info Frank. It looks nice and I can imagine it may be comfortable for eyeglass wearers based on listed ER and the good size of the oculars.

See post#50 for my comments on your pics in that thread. The Trinovid looks a little big to me, but I'm willing to give it a try based on your impressions of it.

Thanks for the link, Bob. I could have sworn that Jan created a thread a few weeks ago breaking the news about a new 8x32 Trinovid, but then his thread mysteriously vanished. I'm glad to see that the news is true, and I'm looking forward to the reviews.

My (Leica) source forgot to tell me that the breaking news of the new Trinnie was under embargo:eek!::eek!:

I forwarded their request to delete that thread and the moderator was so kind to do so:t:

I sent an email yesterday to Leica to confirm FOV for the 8x32 Trinovid and explained it seems too narrow for 8x32 (matching the FOV of 8x42). They forwarded my email to a tech specialist and will get back to me.

I'll post their response here as soon as I get it.

I asked Leica and they stated that it is 124 meters for the 8x and 113 meters for the 10x.

FOV in the 8x Trinnie is identical to the Swaro CL Companion as well as the price.
Conquest HD is much cheaper here (-25%), but the Leica looks more sleek IMO.

How is the build quality of the larger Trinovid HD, eye cups, focus wheel etc.?
A smaller bin would be nice for some occasions, but ER needs to be acceptable.

Pretty sad if the FOV is only 372ft. Frank says it has a huge sweet spot and the CL has this too ... probably due to crummy edges being cut out of view. I had the CL for a while and liked it ... thought it was bright and it did have a large sweet spot. I know some here feel the CL is not sharp enough. I don't think that will be an issue with this new Trinovid 32. Frank already mentions very good apparent sharpness and reviews I've read online so far for Trinovid 42 claim the same. ER is better than the CL too. But, Trinovid 32 seems a bit heavy for this class. I guess it will have its place, but the narrow FOV is disappointing for the 8x32.

Heavy for an 8x32, narrow FoV if the 372' measure is accurate, and priced above some of its competitors.

I'll pass, I'd either shoot for the Meostar HD, Conquest, Genesis, or even the Monarch Hg 42mm in this price range. Or just stick with the 42mm Trinovid HD which is just a few ounces heavier but has the same FoV and should be brighter and afford easier eye placement.

Yes exactly! I was thinking of 3 out of the 4 bins that you mentioned. I realize that the Trinovid is no longer their top tier bin but it really comes down to price point for me. I recently noticed that Cabela's was advertising the 8x32 "Euro HD" for $699 again and I've always been impressed with the Conquest. It would be difficult for me to spend that kind of money on the new Trinovid with that FOV, made harder by the fact that I still enjoy my 8x32BN with a great FOV.

I think that Swarovski get's away with a 372' FOV on the CL because it's a "compact" 30mm bin and sort of gets away with not competing with the other 32's directly. I'm sure the small Trinovids will be very nice, but I imagine sales will suffer a bit based on specifications alone.

Outside the weight the Swaro Cl and this Leica are morer or less identical from specs and price, isnt it? How comes that these two "Alpha"-companies cant create top stuff at this interesting price point? After all, € 900 - 1000 is a lot of money and, as mentioned, one can get a lot of performance from the likes of Meopta, Kowa etc.

The only thing identical is the FOV actually.
Trinovid is bigger (longer & 32mm vs 30mm) and heavier (by 5 ounces!).
Trinovid ER is longer (17 vs 15).
Trinovid Closer focus (3.3ft vs 6.5ft)
Trinovid approx 200 bucks cheaper over here.

A few of these differences can be big factors for people trying to choose between the two.

But your main point is valid. Leica blew it with FOV.
close focus is very nice however.

I'm still hoping the spec for FOV is wrong (wishful thinking). Steve C has measured FOV on a few bins in the past which revealed different results from specs so maybe there is a small chance for that here.

I'm sure the optics and mechanics are very nice as Frank says, so I still have some level of interest esp since I've been waiting for an 8x32 from Leica with good ER for a looooong time.

Comparing this new Trinovid to the CL isn't really that flattering IMO, as I find the Swaro CL to be their worst offering, by far.

My guess is Leica didn't want Trinovid challenging Ultravid so they limited its fov. Zeiss did something similar with the original Conquest which had both 8x30/8x40 at 120m and so didn't challenge the FLs at 140m (8x32) and 135m (8x42). But this just made the Conquests look undernourished with regard to objective size and FOV and todays Conquest HDs are much more competitive.

There have been rumours that Ultravid might discontinue in the next 2-3 years and if it did and was replaced by a new model with around 130m FOV then it would be intermediate between Trinovid at 124m and Noctivid 8x42 at 135m and preserve a hierarchy.

Just speculation.

Too many vids, and ultras are no longer ultra, so it makes sense they consolidate down to Trinovid and Noctivid.
