20th November 2018 Mitilini Lidl Supermarket
Cattle egret Bubulcus ibis
Strange one this, Eleni Galinou photographed a Cattle Egret on a car park
opposite the Lidl Supermarket at Mitilini , the islands capital.
Cattle egrets are scarce vagrants to Lesvos , though sightings
appear to becoming more frequent.

25/11/18 Mitilini to Kalloni Road near "the mill"
Immature golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) reported by an ex pat staying on the island.

Kalloni Salt Pans
A brief report on Lesvos Bird News mentions an influx, at Kalloni Salt Pans of small flocks
wintering golden plover and sky larks. In addition to the massive rafts of coots and small
numbers of Dalmatian pelicans, storks and common finches .
As far as spring visitors to the island go, golden plover and skylark are difficult birds
to add to any Lesvos tick list.

~ Little grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis)

Gulf of Kalloni - Red crested pochard
Local enthusiast, Giorgis Laskaridis found and photographed
9 red crested pochard, photos reproduced with his kind permission.
The birds were seen on the Gulf of Kalloni, near the channel that runs
out to sea, adjacent the race track.
The species is a rare visitor to Lesvos.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone on Birdforum.
Not much news to report , except that there have been some good murmurations
of common starlings around the Kalloni Salt Pans over the past week.
Not a common species outside of winter.

As reported by her on Lesvos Bird News today,
local environmentalist and Bird Tour Guide, Eleni Galinou
found the Merlin below, at Mesa Wetland.

Although scarce, the odd bird turns up on Lesvos, usually
during the winter time.
