Does it say anything about timing? Do the two subspecies also arrive back at different times?

Couldn't access it via this link, Richard. It seems you must enter JStor via the special "token" link, given ia. on the AOU website :
www.jstor.org/stoken/ucaltoken/HGqHqGUjh38IMuhmJHmG/full
(After you have done this, the direct link will work, though...)
OK - thanks, Laurent. :t:

The direct link presumably worked for me only because I'd previously accessed the other Auk 129(4) 'Editors Choice' paper on www.aou.org (which required acceptance of JSTOR's Terms and Conditions).

Nathan Pieplow, Earbirding.com, 30 Apr 2013: "Russet-backed" vs. "Olive-backed" Swainson's Thrushes.

Monroe & Sibley 1993 lists Olive-backed Thrush Catharus (ustulatus) swainsoni as a possible species.

Evans Mack & Yong 2000 (BNA Online):
Six subspecies currently recognized that segregate into 2 groups, russet-backed (ustulatus group) and olive-backed (swainsoni group), differing in plumage, breeding habitat, winter range, and in some vocalizations (M. A. Ramos in Phillips 1991, Am. Ornithol. Union 1998). Russet-backed group winters in Mexico and Central America, and olive-backed group in nw. and central South America (Bond 1963, Marshall 1988, Phillips 1991).

Collar 2005 (HBW 10).
