Aberrant reed warbler? Mauritania (1 Viewer)

Lots of passage still in Nouakchott today.

This was one of the warblers. I can only make it into a European reed warbler regrowing an almost white tail.

What is it please?

All help gratefully received as ever.

Tail looks to be entirely missing. I think those white feathers are the long under tail coverts.

This is what I thought as well. Looks like an Eurasian Reed Warbler indeed.

Given the recent transfer of Iberian & NW African reed warbler populations into African Reed Warbler, can that species be excluded?

I'm not sure what fact you are referring to but the subsaharan African Reed has a much shorter pp. I'm not sure about those resident oasis ssp. of Eurasian Reed...

The taxon of reed warbler that breeds in Iberia, Morocco, & Algeria, formerly treated as Acrocephalus scirpaceus ambiguus, has been found to be genetically closer to African birds than other European birds, so is now treated as Acrocephalus baeticatus ambiguus. See IOC list :t:

Should check IOC more often I usually only use HBW. So yes, when following IOC better only call it Reed Warbler sp.
